Residents of Kwa-Thema in Ekurhuleni have marched against the ongoing scourge of gender-based violence, demanding stronger action from law enforcement and authorities.

The march follows the discovery of the bodies of nine women in the Ekurhuleni region in less than two months, heightening concern among communities about the safety of women.

Police have said they have not established a confirmed link between the cases, while investigations continue to determine whether there are connections between the incidents.

March organisers are calling for GBVF cases to be investigated effectively, perpetrators to be brought to justice and victims to receive adequate support from authorities and social services.

Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has named his final 30-man squad for South Africa’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.

Mosimane has also strengthened his technical team by appointing former Botswana coach Morena Ramoreboli as his assistant as South Africa prepares for the qualifiers.

Bafana Bafana will host Guinea at Orlando Stadium on 26 September before travelling to Cairo to face Eritrea four days later. The squad largely retains the core of the team that represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mosimane reduced his preliminary squad from 35 players to 30 for the two matches as he begins his second spell in charge of the national team.

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has reached its first anniversary after beginning public hearings on 17 September 2025. The inquiry is examining allegations of criminality, corruption and undue influence within the criminal justice system.

Over the past year, the commission has heard evidence from 110 witnesses during 174 hearing days. Those who have testified include SAPS and Hawks members, municipal police officials, prosecutors, MPs, government officials, private individuals and experts.

The hearings have generated 26,352 pages of oral testimony transcripts and more than 105,000 pages of documentary evidence. The commission's hotline also received 1,894 calls, while members of the public submitted 4,548 emails.

The inquiry has also been followed by arrests, criminal charges, court appearances, suspensions and resignations involving several people who have featured in its proceedings. However, the commission chairperson has stressed that all the evidence has not yet been assessed and definitive findings will only be made in the final report.

More than 30 children were treated at Oudtshoorn Hospital after developing suspected symptoms of food poisoning following a sports day in Dassieweg, Oudtshoorn. The Western Cape Department of Health confirmed that 33 children were taken to hospital.

Five children were initially admitted, but by Tuesday afternoon only one child remained in hospital, with the others having been discharged. The incident is being investigated by environmental health officials from the provincial health department and the municipality.

Food was provided to participants at the sports day, and the organiser said chicken prepared for the event was suspected of being linked to the illnesses. However, the cause has not been established and the investigation is continuing.

The event reportedly involved between 80 and 90 children, while some adult volunteers also became ill. Authorities are working to establish exactly what caused the illnesses.

Rising water levels in the Isipingo River and estuary south of Durban have prompted eThekwini Municipality to remove sand from the beach to improve water flow into the sea.

A Tractor Loader Backhoe was brought to Isipingo Beach on Thursday to lower the sand level and help prevent rising water from flooding nearby homes.

Officials say heavy rainfall has increased the amount of water flowing into the river. Homes in Steenbras and Bonito Avenue, as well as the Isipingo Island Hotel, could be affected if levels continue rising.

The municipality has activated its Disaster Management Centre and placed emergency services on high alert as heavy rain is forecast for Thursday and Friday. Residents have been urged to avoid flood-prone roads, low-lying areas and fast-flowing water.

Former Defence Minister and National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has denied involvement in the awarding of an R80 million tender to military contractor Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu.

The denial came during cross-examination in the High Court in Pretoria. The State alleges that Mapisa-Nqakula’s involvement ultimately led to the tender being awarded.

Mapisa-Nqakula told the court that she did not give Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu the tender and disputed the State’s version of her alleged involvement.

Tributes continue to pour in for music rights activist and former SABC sports presenter Owen Ndlovu, whose body was discovered in Thokoza on Wednesday after he was hijacked and kidnapped in Katlehong.

Those who knew Ndlovu described him as a brave and outspoken activist who challenged powerful industry bodies. His colleague Eugene Mthethwa said his death has raised questions, while stressing that it would be premature to speculate about a possible motive.

Ndlovu was reportedly due to appear in court as a whistleblower. A memorial service is planned for 23 September as his family mourns his death.

Mugg & Bean waitress Marie Tshiala has won her Labour Court battle after her dismissal was found to be both substantively and procedurally unfair.

Tshiala was dismissed after a confrontation with the restaurant’s general manager in June 2024. The employer alleged that she made a discriminatory remark, while evidence before the court established that she had said, “this is not India.”

The Labour Court upheld the finding that there was no valid reason for her dismissal and that she had not been given a disciplinary hearing. Her R15,120 compensation award was also upheld, although other amounts were adjusted.
