Department of Health and Human Services, four out of five African American women are overweight. In response to this health crisis, Detroit's Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History launched the 30 Days To Lose It! program, inspired by the hit TV show, “The Biggest Loser,” in March 2010 for Women's History Month. It was so popular that it was brought back as a year-long fitness and he
alth drive for all women in September 2010. Each month tackles a different health topic, and includes a monthly health screening by either the Henry Ford Institute on Multicultural Health or the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion, as well as an insightful topical seminar or two, and a weekly workout in a safe and supportive environment. Now endorsed by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports, ongoing fitness and health sessions take place every Tuesday evening at the museum. 30 Days To Lose It! is free for museum members and $5 for non-members per session. Nonmembers who attend 8 consecutive sessions receive a complimentary museum membership, making their next 12 months free. Attendees should enter the museum through the main (Warren Avenue) entrance. Well-lit parking is free on Warren Avenue after 6 p.m., as well as on Brush Street. include Weight Watchers, the Henry Ford Institute on Multicultural Health, Range of Motion Fitness, FitnessWorks, Cabot Creamery Cooperative and the City of Detroit Department of Health & Wellness Promotion.
