The recent Cyclospora outbreak has had me thinking less about produce itself and more about our relationship with the food system.

Cyclospora isn’t caused by vegetables. It’s caused by contamination somewhere along the journey from farm to table. Large, centralized supply chains can allow a single contamination event to affect thousands of people before anyone realizes something is wrong.

That doesn’t mean industrial agriculture is inherently bad, or that everyone should be shopping exclusively at farmers markets. For many people, that’s simply not possible.

But it has reminded me how valuable relationships are.
Relationships create accountability. They create transparency. They help preserve quality. And they remind us that food doesn’t simply appear on a shelf. Someone planted it, tended it, harvested it, and brought it to us.

At LINNÉ, we source directly for the very same reason. Not because we believe everything should be local—in fact, many botanicals are best grown in their native climates, and we believe in honoring that botanical continuity—but because we believe in knowing the people behind the ingredients whenever possible.

Whether it’s food or skincare, the closer we are to the source, the more we understand what we’re bringing into our lives.

(This isn’t meant to ignore the reality that many communities have limited access to fresh, local food. It is simply an appreciation for those moments when we can build a closer relationship with the people who grow what nourishes us.)

My summer philosophy is simple: enjoy the sun, but respect your skin.
