The Truth About “Even Skin Tone” in Skin of Color

Achieving a more even complexion isn’t about changing your skin — it’s about understanding how your skin responds and giving it the right care.

For skin of color, hyperpigmentation can appear more easily and may last longer after acne, irritation, inflammation, hormonal changes, or sun exposure. Melanin-rich skin has unique needs, and treatments that are too harsh can sometimes make discoloration worse.

The key is a personalized approach that focuses on protecting your skin barrier, using the right ingredients, and addressing the root cause of dark spots safely and effectively.

At Buckhead Dermatology, we understand the beauty and complexity of skin of color and provide expert care designed to help you achieve a healthy, radiant, and balanced complexion.

It’s hard to believe sunscreen is still relatively new—only developed in the 1930s, with SPF ratings introduced in 1962. For most of U.S. history, protection meant hats and shade alone.

With the sun strong in July, long hours outdoors can quickly turn into sunburn risk. A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ applied and reapplied throughout the day remains one of the simplest ways to protect your skin and prevent long-term damage.

Keloids are more than just a scar—they’re an overgrowth of tissue that can continue to thicken and extend beyond the original injury site. They often form after piercings, acne, cuts, or surgical wounds, and while they’re not harmful, they can become tender, itchy, or emotionally frustrating.

Keloids occur when the skin produces excess collagen during healing. While anyone can develop them, genetics and skin tone play a significant role, with higher risk in individuals of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent. They may also appear more frequently during periods of hormonal change like puberty or pregnancy.

The good news is keloids are treatable. At Buckhead Dermatology, options may include corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and flatten the scar, cryotherapy for smaller lesions, laser therapy to improve texture and redness, and in some cases surgical removal combined with preventive treatments. Silicone sheets and pressure therapy can also support gradual improvement at home with consistent use.

Because keloids can be stubborn, early evaluation matters. A personalized treatment plan from a board-certified dermatologist can make a real difference in both appearance and comfort.

Warnings Against Intense Summer UV Exposure

Summer is meant to be enjoyed—but it also brings one of the most preventable health risks we see in dermatology: ultraviolet (UV) damage.

UV exposure is not just about sunburn. UVA rays pe*****te deep into the skin, affecting DNA and accelerating long-term damage, while UVB rays are responsible for burns and surface injury. Over time, this damage accumulates and increases the risk of skin cancer.

Peak UV hours are typically 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—the same hours many people are outdoors, especially around water or during travel and recreation. Even shade is not always protection when UV rays reflect off surfaces like water, sand, and pavement.

Protect your skin with consistency:
• Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher (SPF 50 for extended outdoor exposure)
• Reapply every 2 hours
• Wear protective clothing, hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses
• Avoid tanning beds completely
• Schedule annual skin cancer screenings
• Pay attention to changing moles or new skin lesions

Skin cancer remains the most common cancer in the U.S., and most cases are linked to cumulative sun exposure—meaning prevention matters every single day.

Before heading outside, check the UV index and plan accordingly. Small habits today can prevent serious disease tomorrow.
