Breastfeeding is a beautiful journey, but let’s be honest, it can come with its fair share of challenges, especially in those first few weeks. One of the most common hurdles new moms face is getting a good, deep latch.
If it hurts, or if you feel like your baby isn't quite getting enough milk, it might be a shallow latch.
Here is a quick checklist to help you spot the signs and fix it:
Signs of a Shallow Latch:
Pain and Discomfort: Breastfeeding shouldn’t hurt. Constant ni**le soreness is a big clue.
Clicking Sounds: If you hear a clicking noise while they nurse, air might be getting in.
An Unsatisfied Baby: If your little one seems fussy or hungry immediately after a long feed.
How to Fix It in 4 Simple Steps:
1. Wait for a Wide Open Mouth: Give them a second to open wide, almost like a big yawn.
2. Chin First: Bring your baby to your breast chin first to help them get a deeper mouthful.
3. Aim for the Ar**la: Don't just target the ni**le, make sure they are taking in a good portion of the darker skin around it.
4. Check Their Lips: Their lips should be flared out like a little fish, not tucked in.
Be patient with yourself and your baby, you are both learning a brand new skill together.
