A groundbreaking comparative study by Prof. Raphael Nyarkotey Obu reveals why Ghana must rethink its regulation of traditional and complementary medicine. India treats Ayurveda, Unani, Homoeopathy, and naturopathy as distinct systems—not one "alternative" category.

Ghana's TMPC currently regulates everything under a single umbrella, blurring professional identities and legal scopes. The study proposes profession-specific boards, clear titles, and competency-based regulation—protecting patients while respecting each discipline's unique identity.

The future of healthcare integration depends on getting this right.

Across Africa, traditional medicine isn't alternative — it's primary care. With 70–80% reliance, cultural trust, affordability, and reach make it indispensable.

Ghana has integrated 55 TCIM facilities into public health, but gaps remain: no NHIS coverage for herbal medicines, thin regulatory capacity, and sustainability concerns. The path to UHC may run through traditional medicine, not around it.

The TAFHA Ashanti Regional Mass Registration Programme was held in Kumasi, Ghana, on August 10, 2026. It aimed to register and license traditional medicine practitioners, bringing together nearly 1,000 participants. Naturopathy and traditional medicine are widely used for uterine fibroids in Nigeria, yet solid clinical evidence supporting their effectiveness is lacking. Herbal remedies are often touted as solutions, but no high-quality studies prove they reliably shrink or eliminate fibroids.

Some practitioners believe certain plants may affect hormone pathways linked to fibroid growth, but they acknowledge that rigorous research and safety evaluations are urgently needed.

A recent study found that 85% of personal care products contain undisclosed chemicals, with 98% having at least one unlabeled chemical.

Many of these are known or suspected health hazards, including endocrine disruptors like phthalates and parabens. This research indicates that product labels often do not fully disclose their chemical composition.

The recent surge in food adulteration in Ghana is very alarming. Food adulteration is the process by which the quality of food is reduced by either adding foreign material or removing important ingredients to maximize profit

For instance, pepper and tomato powder have been adulterated with annatto seeds, dried cola nuts or pear seed powder and honey has been adulterated with molasses

You slept for eight hours. You skipped the late‑night scrolling. You even had your morning coffee. So why does 2 p.m. still feel like hitting a wall?

If this sounds familiar, it’s not a you problem; it’s a problem millions face. People drag themselves through each day battling a fog of fatigue that no amount of sleep seems to fix. They blame stress, aging, or simply “being busy.” But for many, the culprit is hiding in plain sight — the problem is in their blood.

Energy drinks are fast becoming the new best friend of Ghanaian youth, commercial drivers, gym enthusiasts, and night‑shift workers. These vibrant beverages seem to have taken over every corner of the country with remarkable speed.

Their popularity is largely driven by advertisements promising an instant energy boost and improved focus during long hours of work. But what if there is a silent danger hidden in these drinks that have captured the taste buds of many Ghanaians?

There have been no reported cases of deaths caused by energy drinks in Ghana. However, the absence of reported cases does not mean such incidents cannot occur. Many symptoms of heart problems and other health issues associated with energy drink consumption are often ignored.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) confirms that the pharmaceutical industry is increasingly shifting toward natural medicine. The WHO’s Global Report on Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (2024) and the Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034 emphasise the growing role of herbal and plant–based remedies in mainstream healthcare systems.

As global interest in plant-based medicine grows, it’s vital to honour the custodians of this knowledge. Political studies researcher Dr Jacob Cloete, said indigenous communities are not just sources of information; they are stewards of ecosystems and philosophies that prioritise harmony over exploitation.

Multivitamins are one of the most commonly used supplements worldwide – but for most people, there isn’t evidence of a huge benefit.
One of the largest trials to date found a small improvement in memory among older adults taking a daily multivitamin. But the difference was tiny, amounting to roughly a quarter of a word in a 20-word recall test. Other outcomes such as mood, immune function and overall wellbeing have generally shown little to no improvement in people who are already meeting their nutritional needs through food.
That doesn’t mean multivitamins are pointless.
