Dark spots form below the surface, where your skin produces pigment. That is the first thing to understand, because it shapes what each step in your ritual is actually for.

An oil-based serum is built to get actives where they need to be. Your skin’s outer barrier is mostly lipids, so oil-based actives travel through it more readily than water-based ones. A moisturiser has a different job. It nourishes and reinforces the barrier, holds water in, and helps seal the surface against everyday stressors like pollution.
