A powerful BBC investigation has provided further evidence, if any were needed, of the urgent need for the Government to introduce the proposed licensing system for non-surgical cosmetic practitioners in England.

The scale of this sector is now impossible to ignore. The number of practitioners offering botulinum toxin treatments in the UK has reportedly risen from around 3,500 in 2023 to nearly 20,000 in 2025.

Procedures such as botulinum toxin injections and dermal fillers are often presented as low-risk beauty treatments, but they can cause serious complications when carried out by people without appropriate training, clinical knowledge or safeguards in place.

Patients should be able to expect basic protections: appropriate training, safe premises, clear accountability and proper routes for redress if things go wrong.

England cannot afford further delay. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland should also be looking at comparable requirements as a matter of urgency.
