Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus are a well-known
“rooftopper” couple famous for climbing skyscrapers and tall structures worldwide without safety gear or permission. Their adventures and relationship were featured in the 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story. This stunt was highly dangerous and unauthorized, drawing criticism for the risks to themselves, first responders, and the landmark (which also hosts broadcast antennas). It has gone viral with footage from news helicopters and their own social media posts. Note that many couples propose more conventionally on the Empire State Building’s 86th-floor observation deck (via official packages or otherwise), but this illegal climb made headlines due to its audacity.
The pair, experienced Russian urban climbers and daredevils, illegally scaled the building’s antenna/spire (reaching over 1,400 feet / ~454 meters high, above the public observation decks). They unfurled a banner reading: “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.” While on or near the spire, Ivan reportedly proposed to Angela (he got down on one knee, presented a ring, and they kissed after). They took photos and videos, including close-ups of the ring and were arrested without incident after descending to a lower platform and taken into custody by NYPD. Charges are pending.
