I remember when I was a kid growing up in Cameroon, we would wear these braids with beads and race each other. It wasn’t about being the fastest; it was about making the beads clack against each other. It was our equivalent of white little girls letting their hair flow in the wind. We felt cute as hell. We were cute as hell.

The receptionist at My Friendly Thai just told me that they loved my hair. But instead of saying thank you and letting them move on with their life, I proceeded with oversharing about how I braided it at the streetcar stop during the heavy rain last Thursday, while I was waiting for a childhood friend I hadn't seen in decades.
