Just because I'm still recovering from being sick, doesn't mean I can't record this little drop of knowledge for you ;)

The greatest fears and most common worries people have when bleaching their hair: damage + orange.

And for good reason—after all, you hear about it happening all the time, because using bleach wrong is unfortunately very easy to do.

Bleach is... quirky. And these quirks can easily mess up your results if they aren't accounted for.

But the real reason it's so common? These quirks are not actually taught in school (for some dumb reason). That's why there are so many horror stories out there about people's hair being totally ruined by bleach—even when professionals do it. So I don't blame you for being cautious when deciding if you should give it a try.

But you need to know that as long as the person you've picked to do your hair has done their homework, and put in the hours to develop a complete undstanding of the intricacies of bleach chemistry, the risk of ending up with damaged or orange hair go down to almost zero. Really. Because bleaching is just a skill, and like any skill, once you master it it's very easy to successfully do over and over again :)

And so there's truly nothing to be afraid of when you're in the hands of a genuine expert you found by doing your own homework 🫶

Your layers should not loose their shape from just growing an inch, that's kinda ridiculous. And evidence that your stylist doesn't know how to cut layers properly. Which is fine on its own—everyone has to learn. But it's not fair to ask you to spend more of your time and your money just so they can fix their own haircut over and over again. (And frankly, it's also unethical.)

If a haircut needs frequent maintenance -> it's just a bad haircut. So then why keep booking with the same person who did it so they can continue giving you more bad haircuts? 🤔 Kinda wild if you ask me.

Instead, go to someone else, even if their base price is higher. It will still save you in the long run when you don't have to get it done so often, and plus, in-between appointments you will have overall nicer hair. A win-win!

(This only applies to layered cuts—not bobs, pixies, or fades.)

Is it weird for a hairdresser to say that hair doesn't matter?
Probably.
Yes.

But hear me out 😅

Communication is not your responsibility as the client, it's theirs as the professional.

It is not your burden to bear, and the reality is, it sometimes doesn't even matter.

Because it's not always a communication issue, but a skill/attitude issue.

That's why I always recommend booking just a consultation first when you're going to a new stylist—as a risk-free way to assess your compatibility with them.

How can you tell?

Just show them your inspo photos and tell them what you want, to the best of your ability. If they can't take over from there—if you don't feel confident that they're understanding and respecting you—then yeah, there is nothing more you can do about it except go to someone else.

I never set out to critizise this industry.
I didn't even use social media much before I started posting.

But holy f*ck.

When I got here and witnessed the toxicity and zero integrity so many hairdressers have towards their clients (and was reminded that these aren't just a few outliers in other countries, they're common—I've personally known some throughout my career) I couldn't hold back.

Knowing that people in positions of power are out there taking advantage of/mistreating the very people they're meant to serve, pi**es me right off. And not only when hairdressers do it, but anyone—I just talk about hairdressers because that's my lane. But man, people who don't take their jobs seriously, lack integrity, or have lost sight of the big picture really make me wanna do something about it.

So yeah, when I see a post or comment that perpetuates that sh*t, I'm gonna fight back (with words not fists of course) and I don't think I will stop.

Because they are grown-ass adults who can make decisions for themselves, and know better than anyone else when they're ready to have their hair done again.

It's no one else's place to tell you when you're hair has grown too long, or your roots are too big. A suggestion can be fine, but then it's very important that you're also told WHY they gave that suggestion.

When a stylist tells you "this is what's best" you deserve to know what outcome it's best for. Because sometimes the reason actually isn't for you or your best interest. Sometimes it's to pressure you to align with their beauty standards, or keep their schedule booked at your expense.

That's why I don't use the "what's best" approach when discussing maintenance. I skip straight to why—so they have all the info they need to then make an informed decision on what's actually best for them.

INFORMED CONSENT FTW 👏

And the fact that my clients always eventually book again proves just how unnecessary it is to be controlling when you provide value.

The holy trinity of healthy hair styling does not include brands or expensive products.

Yet that's all you hear about because CONSUMERISM—and because people like hearing that they don't need to change to fix their problems, so that's most of the content people make, sadly.

But the reality is that the foundation of healthy hair styling is your technique, just like how the number one safety feature of any car is the driver.

So always remember:
Thin sections
Absurdly low heat
And a bit of heat protectant ;)

Step negative 1:
Prep with Re:coil from AG (or your preferred curl cream), then diffuse until your hair is 100% dry.

Step 1:
Gently scrunch out the cast to get rid of that crispy, wet look while keeping your curls defined and frizz-free.

Step 2:
Carefully slide your fingers underneath your hair from your hairline, staying right along the roots (so you don't mess up your curls), then give it a gentle shake to lift your hair off your scalp and create volume.

Step 3:
Now fluff your curls to make them look a little more natural. I find a pick or tail comb works best because it gives you way more control than your hands. Your hair won't stick to it, so you're much less likely to accidentally make your curls messy.

Step 4:
Finally, intentionally place or twist individual curls wherever you think they look best. This is especially nice if you're about to take photos, but just keep in mind they won't stay perfectly placed all day long.

Like the proper answer to all questions: it depends 🤔

What's important is just to put the least amount of stress on your hair as possible.

So for most people, brushing wet is best, especially when using a detangling spray (like my favourite, the super lightweight AG conditioning mist) because there's more slip.

But for others (like in the video) it's practically matted when it's wet and brushing it gently can take forever. So if that's the case, it's best to dry it first. But also know that if your hair is like that, it's usually because the hair is damaged—so consider consulting with a trusted professional about what it's from (often bad quality shampoo) and what you can do about it.

And always ALWAYS brush gently starting from the ends first—and if you have long/thick hair, in sections ✌️
