What does it mean to grow up with the ocean? While hitchhiking from Imsouane to Taghazout, I asked Sana if I could interview her.

We talked about growing up by the sea, discovering surfing, Moroccan beauty standards and being one of the few local women in the water.

This carousel shares part of our conversation. Read the full interview on my Substack, link in bio! 🌊

I sponatenously hitchhiked to Taghazout to see a friend, she to get her wetsuit repaired. Somewhere along the road, I asked if I could interview her. We laughed like two people who had been friends forever.

Her white-and-blue dress, the sea, my underexposed film photographs. A special kind of blue.

I wrote about meeting Sana on my Substack. The full story is there link in bio, interview will be up soon 💙

I met Sana at the bottom of the hill, by the big road sign on the only road down to Imsouane.
In her white-and-blue gingham dress, her big curly hair wild around her face, she stood there confidently waiting at the bottom of the hill.

On a day when the ocean was flat, I cut my surf coach Hbeka’s curls on the rocks. Four girls watched us from above. When we were done, they slowly came down one by one and asked if I could cut theirs too.

It reminded me of something I had almost forgotten about hairdressing: it was never really about “just” hair.

I wrote the longer story about that afternoon, the strange intimacy of cutting someone’s hair, and why I keep coming back to it → Link in my bio 💙
