Here's what to expect in your first Structural Bodywork session with Lewis
One of the biggest takeaways I’ve had didn’t come from the clinic, but from a dissection lab.
I remember watching students test shoulder range of motion on an untouched cadaver.
After removing the skin, they retested — the range increased noticeably.
Then after removing the superficial fascia (connective tissue), it increased again.
Of course, this wasn’t a living body. But there are often parallels in practice.
Some of the biggest changes I have seen in clinic haven’t come from working as deeply or as hard as possible, but in many cases working lighter or in very superficial tissues.
This may be the fascia responding, the nervous system, the muscular system, the cellular matrix or human touch and connection...
Regardless it often results in increased range of motion, vitality and ease of overall movement, as well as longer-lasting results.

A simple moment that helps me stay present for each session.
Between clients, I check in with my breath.
Inhale for 4
Hold for 4
Exhale for 4
Hold for 4
A few rounds make a noticeable difference in my body.
See how it feels in yours.

Can you feel where your spine stops moving?
Moving slowly, one part at a time, you start to notice where things flow…and where they don’t.
For me, the lower back is where it feels most restricted.
Bringing awareness to that is often where change begins.

This is something I often show clients in sessions.
Working through the sides of the back, where the body connects from the lower back into the shoulder, can make a noticeable difference.
It’s an area many people overlook.
Small, simple things like this can help support what we do in the clinic.

This is part of working with the body as a whole
Rather than just focusing on where something feels tight, we’re looking at how different areas are relating to each other - including the connection from the lower back up into the shoulders.
When that relationship improves, movement often feels easier and your body as a whole feels more supported.

Connecting your lower back to your shoulders
One thing that can play a role in lower back discomfort is how it connects through to the shoulders.
There’s a large muscle that links that whole area together, so tension above can influence how the lower back feels.
When we start to balance that out in Remedial Massage, the lower back often doesn’t have to work as hard and things feel more a lot more comfortable.
