Does a HEATWAVE bring cancellations and empty spaces to your treatment diary?

IT DOESN’T HAVE TO!

Yes, some advanced treatments, such as chemical peels, may need to be paused or adjusted during periods of intense heat and sun exposure.

However, there are still plenty of safe, effective and profitable treatments you can offer.

Here’s how I keep my beauty diary full with minimal cancellations during a heatwave:

1️⃣ Create a cool, comfortable environment

Show your clients that you’re prepared for the heat.

For the ideas how to do it, watch my post: “The Ultimate Heatwave Setup.”

2️⃣ Adapt your treatment menu

Your clients’ skin needs change with the seasons—and your menu should change with them. Adjust your protocols and focus on gentle, hydrating, soothing and barrier-supporting treatments.

3️⃣ Create signature summer treatments

Seasonal treatments feel relevant and give clients a reason to book now. In my studio, I offer signature facials designed specifically for summer skin.

You can see an example on my YouTube channel: Joanna Bojarska - link in my BIO

4️⃣ Promote summer-friendly combinations

Combine treatments or include a complimentary add-on to make your summer offer more appealing—for example, a free eye treatment, cooling mask or LED session with selected bookings.

5️⃣ Add a thoughtful summer freebie

A skincare sample, SPF sachet or mini aftercare product can elevate the experience and help clients care for their skin at home.

6️⃣ Communicate before the appointment

Remind clients that your studio is cool, comfortable and fully prepared for hot weather. Explain how you have adapted their treatment and send clear pre- and post-treatment advice to build confidence.

7️⃣ Have a heatwave cancellation policy

“WHAT DID YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT TODAY’s TREATMENT?”

When was the last time you asked your client this question?
It sounds simple, but the answers might completely change the way you deliver your treatments.

For years, I assumed my clients’ favourite part would be the facial massage, the hot towels or the final skincare products.

I WAS WRONG.

The answer I hear most often is:

“I felt so relaxed.”

“I could completely switch off.”

“I felt safe, calm and looked after.”

That was a real lightbulb moment for me.

It reminded me that while we, as beauty professionals, often focus on perfect techniques and visible results, our clients are often looking for something much deeper—a space where they can escape the outside world, slow down and simply breathe.

Since then, I’ve become even more intentional about the atmosphere I create, because I’ve realised that the treatment starts long before I touch my client’s skin.

Here’s your homework:

At your next appointment, ask your client:

“What did you enjoy the most about today’s treatment?”

Then really listen.

Their answer might give you the best ideas for improving your client experience.

I’d love to know...

💬 What’s the most surprising piece of feedback you’ve ever received from a client?

No Air Conditioning? Here’s how to keep your clients comfortable during a heatwave.

With the recent heatwaves across the UK, I’ve been thinking about how we, as beauty professionals, can continue to provide an exceptional client experience—even when temperatures outside are soaring.

Not every salon or home studio has air conditioning (mine doesn’t!), but that doesn’t mean our clients can’t feel cool, comfortable and completely relaxed during their appointment.

Here are a few simple things I do in my studio:

1.Let your clients know you’re prepared.
A quick message before their appointment reassuring them that your treatment room has been prepared for the hot weather can make a huge difference.

2. Cool the room before each client.
Keep blinds or shutters closed to block direct sunlight and ventilate the room when the temperature outside allows.

3.Use an air cooler if you don’t have air conditioning.
I use an air cooling unit with cold water and ice packs, which helps lower the room temperature without the noise of a traditional portable air conditioner.

4. Invest in cooling accessories.
Cooling blankets and reusable cooling mats placed under the treatment bed or pillow can make your clients much more comfortable.

5. Reduce unnecessary heat.
Keep only essential machines switched on and avoid creating extra heat wherever possible.
Swap candles for room sprays or diffusers.

6. Create a hydration station.
Offer chilled water, fresh fruit, mint, lemon or even electrolytes so your clients can rehydrate before or after their treatment.

7. Use cooling tools during treatments.
Ice globes, chilled jade rollers or other cooling massage tools feel amazing during a facial and help soothe overheated skin.
Use towels that are just pleasantly warm rather than very hot to keep your clients comfortable.

8. Offer a refreshing foot bath.
One of my favourite little touches! A short foot soak in cool or lukewarm water with relaxing salts helps clients cool down after walking around all day in sandals before they settle into their treatment.

Being featured in the latest Vagaro Newsletter felt like the perfect opportunity to share why I chose Vagaro to support my beauty business.
Vagaro

If you know me, you know I’m an old-school pen-and-paper kind of girl, so moving to an online system wasn’t an easy decision.

What changed my mind? The support.

From day one, I had a dedicated Success Manager who guided me through every step. Even now, whenever I need help, the team is only a call or WhatsApp message away.

Today, Vagaro helps me:
✔️ Reduce no-shows with automated reminders
✔️ Keep consultation and medical forms organised
✔️ Securely store before & after photos
✔️ Manage all my client records in one place

Running a beauty business is demanding, and having a system that keeps everything organised allows me to focus on what matters most—my clients.

Thank you, Vagaro, for featuring my journey in your latest newsletter.

If you’re a beauty professional looking for a system that genuinely supports your business, I’d be happy to share my experience or introduce you to their amazing team.

Have you already made the switch to a digital system, or are you still a pen-and-paper person? 👇

Nobody tells you that running a BEAUTY BUSINESS means having 15 jobs at once...

To all my fellow solo business owners...

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how many hats we wear every single day?

As solo business operators, we’re not just therapists, practitioners, or service providers.

We’re also the receptionist, administrator, stock controller, social media manager, cleaner, photographer, content creator, customer service department, delivery receiver, and everything in between, the list never ends...

But when you create systems, stay organised, and plan ahead, it is absolutely doable.

I’ve been doing it for over 10 years now, and whilst I work independently, I’m incredibly grateful for the support of the people and companies around me.

A huge thank you to my graphic designer, the team behind my online booking system, and my wonderful account managers who help keep everything running smoothly.

I’d love to know...

What’s the one thing you struggle with most as a solo business owner?

For me, it’s definitely keeping on top of stock levels!

SHOULD WE CHARGE FOR SKIN CONSULTATIONS?

Recently, I’ve noticed more and more conversations around this topic within our industry, and I’m genuinely curious about your perspective.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll probably know where I stand.

My initial skin consultations are complimentary.

That said, I completely understand and respect the professionals who choose to charge for theirs. Our time, knowledge, experience, and expertise have value. We would never expect a lawyer, accountant, or medical professional to give their professional advice away for free, so I understand why many beauty professionals feel consultations should be paid for.

For me personally, however, the initial consultation serves a slightly different purpose.

It’s not about providing a full treatment plan, giving away detailed advice, or “selling my knowledge” for free.

It’s about getting to know the person sitting in front of me.

Understanding why they’ve reached out, what concerns they have, what they’ve already tried, what their current skincare routine looks like, and most importantly—whether I am genuinely the right person to help them.

Sometimes I am.

Sometimes I’m not.

And if I believe a client would be better supported by a dermatologist, doctor, or another specialist, I will always point them in that direction.

For me, those first 15 minutes are about connection, trust, and understanding. It’s an opportunity for both the client and myself to decide whether we’re the right fit before beginning a treatment journey together.

Of course, business is important. We all need profitable businesses to continue doing what we love.

But I also believe there is value in the human element of what we do. Many clients come to us feeling overwhelmed, confused, or frustrated by their skin concerns. Sometimes they simply need someone to listen, assess the situation, and guide them towards the right next step.

That’s my philosophy.

But I’d love to hear yours.

👇 Do you charge for your initial skin consultations?

If yes, what are your reasons behind it?

If not, why have you chosen not to?

Let’s have a respectful discussion and learn

In a world of filters, heavy editing, and perfectly curated feeds, AUTHENTICITY has become your biggest competitive advantage.

As beauty professionals, we don’t need to chase viral content or massive followings.

WE NEED TO BUILD TRUST.

For me, that means:
✨ Showing real before & after results
✨ Using unfiltered images
✨ Setting realistic expectations
✨ Being honest about what’s achievable

The truth is, clients aren’t looking for perfection. They’re looking for someone they can trust.

A loyal client base and a fully booked diary will always be worth more than vanity metrics.

Authenticity isn’t just a marketing strategy—it’s the foundation of a sustainable beauty business.

How do you approach authenticity in your business?
