DAY #58: Split Flap for Icon Signage

Brand icons (or logos) are often used in everything from marketing materials to signage, which, over the years, has expanded to include instantly recognizable emojis. Whether your brand has an established icon or logo or merely uses different emojis in your marketing, Split Flap serves as the perfect mechanical medium.

Recently, this has included adding a custom baseball icon to the new Split Flap at the Baseball Hall of Fame. In their gift shop, the "baseball green" display features a fun baseball flap that rotates in and out along with brand messages.

Speaking of Philadelphia and history, our city has over 11,000 historically protected properties, according to Hidden City Philadelphia. For designers and architects working in historic spaces, the topic of heritage preservation often comes up, and how to rehabilitate a historic property to align with modern practicalities.

DAY #56: Picture Flap for History Wall

Our last post ( #55, Picture Flap for Local Placemaking) was all about celebrating a place in the present. Picture Flap can also be used to share the visual history of a town, city, or state. We're creating an in-house Picture Flap inspired by Philadelphia, which will rotate through iconic historical sites and locations such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Art Museum, and more.

Another great Picture Flap project is our custom installation at Heritage Towers, a modern residential community in Lewisville, Texas. Our Picture Flap does what a framed photo or vintage sign cannot: putting local culture on full display with rotating photography, icons, and artwork. The Lewisville-themed Picture Flap features everything from aerial views of the lake and golf courses to State Fair imagery to photos of Topo Chico and local craft brews. See all of the images here!

One of our favorite Picture Flaps to date is the display at Rogers Centre in Toronto, which serves as a dynamic Stadium Wall. This bespoke installation uses an expansive 5 Row by 17 Column Picture Flap as a "Blue Jay highlights flipbook" which rotates through MVP moments, game highlights, and Blue Jay legacy highlights.

DAY #53: Picture Flap for Aquarium and Zoo Displays

We love our local Adventure Aquarium and The Philadelphia Zoo, where the sights and sounds provide a sensory environment and soundscape that lets visitors fully disconnect and be present. The best way to contribute to the offline presence for architects and designers is through a mechanical display like Picture Flap (as seen on the render here), which can rotate through dynamic photographs of animals and their habitats.

DAY #52: Split Flap for Office Sports Scores

Thanks to our robust content management system, Portal, and custom API connectivity options, users can pull in real-time sports scores (as seen with our work for Pass and Stow at Citizens Bank Park). In the office, this adds further functionality (big on the FUN) to the workday, with scores and updates that rotate into place.

DAY #48: Split Flap for Inspirational Quotes

Another great feature of a modern Split Flap is posting inspirational quotes. Spaces that range from coffee shops to retailers to offices love to use inspirational quotes as evergreen content. Inspired by the likes of Dr. Seuss, Gandhi, and Maya Angelou, some of the most popular quotes loved by visitors and guests are even more impactful on a large-scale Split Flap display.

When merely brainstorming use cases, often in the early design process, some may come across smaller consumer signage that can also be used to post quotes. In our experience, consumer signage is best used in residential spaces (legible from up to 4-5 ft away), while our Split Flaps can be read from up to 100 ft away.
