I’m all for small businesses and I love artists who create from the heart. The very fact that we aren’t slick mass market brands is what makes us special. We are in it for the craft, the storytelling, the connection, and more.

Which has me wondering about the brands that hide behind “I’m just a small brand so I need all the help I can get” to excuse the lazy use of generative AI to create everything from perfume formulas to product shots and even marketing copy.

Struggling to work with thick resins, absolutes, cashmeran, exaltolide, etc?

The key is gentle heat, be kind to your materials.

I’ve found a little jar with warm uncooked rice works beautifully to slowly get your materials workable.

NOTE: this is only for thick liquids, etc, not for solid resins like benzoin.

As a perfumer, I go through a lot of fragrant materials when developing a new fragrance. It takes months and many trials (and some tribulations) to reach the version that’ll go out to a client or my testers for evaluation.

Making dilutions of materials is a great way to make this process easier and less wasteful.

And a labeling format like this one helps keep track of important information like supplier, CAS, and date.

This weekend I was honored to be a part of the kickoff panel for UPAT, the Union for Perfumery and Allied Trades, on IG The Perfumer’s Union .

The panel took place at Stéle and brought together a diverse mix of people from across the perfume industry to explore the things that we care about in the world of perfume.

In a very brave way, founder Michael Ælfric Nordstrand has said, let’s put out a first draft and start getting input. There are more questions than answers at this point, but we’ve got to start somewhere.
