One Simple Way to Begin Shifting Your Epigenetics

Your genes are not your destiny.

Think of your DNA as the blueprint of a house. Epigenetics is like the light switches throughout that house—it helps determine which parts of the blueprint are more active and which remain quieter. While we can't rewrite our DNA, our daily habits can influence how our bodies function over time.

One of the most powerful places to begin is by caring for your nervous system.

When we live in a constant state of stress, our bodies prioritize survival over repair. Chronic stress can influence many biological processes, including those involved in inflammation, immunity, metabolism, and hormone regulation.

Each time you choose to slow your breathing, step outside into nature, nourish your body with whole foods, move gently, sleep well, or connect with people who make you feel safe, you're sending your body a different message:

"You are safe. You can rest. You can heal."

These small, consistent choices create an internal environment that supports resilience and well-being. While no single habit can guarantee specific changes in gene expression, over time healthy lifestyle practices can contribute to better overall health and influence biological pathways studied in epigenetics.

Remember, transformation rarely happens through one dramatic change. It happens through the loving choices you make every day.

Every nourishing meal.
Every deep breath.
Every moment of rest.
Every walk in nature.

Each one is a vote for the healthiest version of yourself.

How the Kidneys "Rule" Reproductive Health

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the kidneys are believed to store our deepest reserves of vitality, often called Kidney Essence (Jing). This essence supports:

Puberty and sexual development

Menstrual health

Fertility

Pregnancy

Birth

Postpartum recovery

Menopause and healthy aging

Think of the Kidneys as the Body’s Root System

Just as strong roots nourish a tree’s blossoms and fruit, strong kidney energy is believed to nourish the reproductive organs.

When the roots are depleted, the blossoms may struggle.

In TCM, signs of depleted kidney energy may include:

Fatigue or burnout

Irregular cycles

Difficulty conceiving

Low libido

Feeling cold often

Hair loss or premature graying

Lower back weakness

Frequent urination

Exhaustion after childbirth

Feeling “deeply drained” rather than simply tired

Put some music on this weekend that feels good. Dance. Move your body through whatever it is that you need to move through.
Afterwards, take a moment and reflect how you feel.

In postpartum a woman's hormones are at an all time low. She is tired and her body is healing. This can create big emotions during this time.
Herbs for Emotional Well-Being

Many mothers benefit from gentle nervine herbs such as:

Oat straw
Lemon balm
Chamomile
Lavender (primarily aromatherapy or small amounts in tea)
Rose petals (uplifting and calming)

If feelings of sadness, anxiety, or overwhelm become intense, last more than two weeks, or interfere with caring for yourself or your baby, it's important to seek evaluation for postpartum depression or anxiety. Herbal support can complement—but not replace—appropriate medical care.

A few Tips for Working Through Emotional Blockers

Emotional blockers are often the body's way of protecting us from pain that once felt too overwhelming to process. Instead of trying to "fix" yourself, approach these moments with compassion and curiosity.

1. Name What You're Feeling

Pause and ask yourself:

What emotion is present right now?
Where do I feel it in my body?
What might this emotion be trying to tell me?

Naming an emotion can reduce its intensity and help you respond thoughtfully instead of reacting automatically.

2. Get Curious Instead of Judgmental

Rather than asking, "What's wrong with me?" ask:

What happened that may have contributed to this feeling?
What need is not being met?
Is this emotion connected to an old story or past experience?

Curiosity creates space for healing.

3. Feel It in the Body

Our bodies often store emotions that words cannot express.
Try:

Gentle stretching or yoga
Somatic movement or free-form dancing
Deep breathing
Walking in nature
Full body shaking it out
Massage and bodywork

5 Ways to Nourish the Wild Woman Within
Nourishing the Wild Woman Within

The Wild Woman is the part of you that longs to live authentically, trust her intuition, and move in harmony with the rhythms of nature. She thrives when given space to create, explore, and simply be. Nourishing her is an invitation to remember the wisdom that has always lived within you.

Here are 5 gentle ways to awaken and nourish your Wild Woman:

1)Wander through forests, fields, rivers, or mountains without a destination.

2)Walk barefoot on the earth and reconnect with the grounding energy of nature.

3)Watch the sunrise or sit beneath the moon, allowing yourself to slow down and observe.

4)Dance freely to music that moves your soul without worrying about how you look.

5)Spend time around a campfire, sharing stories, singing, or sitting quietly in reflection.
