Dementia can effect how people see the world 🌍

Dementia does not typically damage the physical structure of the eye; rather, it damages the brain’s visual processing centers.

The eyes act like camera lenses capturing raw footage, but the brain acts as the editor. When dementia impairs that internal processing system, the brain can no longer make sense of the incoming visual signals.

Key Visual-Perceptual Changes Caused by Dementia:

Narrowed Field of View (Tunnel Vision):

As cognitive impairment progresses, the brain slowly cuts out peripheral vision. In later stages, a person's field of vision can shrink from a full 180 degrees down to a narrow cone—often called "binocular vision."

Loss of Contrast Sensitivity: The brain struggles to differentiate between items of similar colors or shades. For example, a white toilet against a white wall or a light-colored meal on a matching white plate may become functionally invisible to them.

Altered Depth Perception: Judging distances becomes exceptionally difficult. A dark, flat doormat might be interpreted as a deep, open hole, causing the person to stop in their tracks or refuse to walk over it.

Visual Misperceptions: Patterns on walls or carpets can transform into moving objects, bugs, or uneven terrain in the person’s mind. Mirrors can also cause confusion, as the individual may perceive their own reflection as a stranger in the room.

Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA): Often called the "visual variant" of Alzheimer’s, PCA selectively attacks the back part of the brain responsible for processing visual information. People with PCA experience severe visual processing decline—such as struggling to read lines of text or recognize familiar faces—long before significant memory loss sets.

When you (or a loved one) is allocated direct payments or pays privately for their care, you can either pay a carer as an employer or pay the carer as self employed (the carer registers as self employed with HMRC). If you decide to go down the employer route, here is a handy guide about what your responsibilities are.

Are you an unpaid carer who would like to help shape future services and support for carers across the Trust?
We are looking for carers to join our Carer Action Plan Task and Finish Group and share their experiences to help inform future improvements.
We welcome carers from all backgrounds and circumstances, including young carers, working-age carers, parent carers and older carers.
No previous experience is needed. Training and support will be provided, and meetings will take place online.
