Simplicity is overlooked. Not everything needs to be complex, and more often than not the greatest results come from the simplest solutions. Don’t over think it. Bring it back to the basics.

Some will look at this photo and not understand what’s going on, some will look at it and speculate what’s happening but only the people involved understand what’s truly happening behind this photo.

Context is key. In a platform full of oversaturated information and cookie cutter approaches, this is the missing link. Context is individualized, some look at an exercise or approach and label it as a bad, some may look at it and not understand why it’s being done, but what’s missing is the context around the individual. Their body type, their injury history, their lifestyle. Understanding your own body puts these exercises and approaches into context for you personally. This is why some approaches and exercises work for some and not for others. If something isn’t working, it simply may not be the right choice for you, don’t give up and find something that works.

This is a very basic mobility exercise designed to improve Thoracic spine rotation. Your Thoracic spine mobility plays a pivotal role in shoulder mobility and when the range of motion in your spine is limited, chances are it’s playing a big factor in why your shoulders are limited as well.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Here is how to do it!
Step 1:
Get on all fours and sit back slightly in the directions of your heals. Make sure your hands are placed under your shoulders or slightly in front, which ever you prefer.
•
Step 2:
Bend elbow to 90 degrees and bring arm up and out so that arm is inline with your back, and your hand is inline with your head.
•
Step 3:
Push opposite arm into floor to slightly protract your shoulder blade and begin to rotate T-Spine. Make sure to keep your hand and arm inline with your head and back (this will give you a better feedback on how much T-Spine rotation you have). As you rotate up towards the ceiling, squeeze the same side shoulder blade slightly towards the spine.
•
Step 4:
Begin to rotate towards planted arm (still maintaining that slight pressure into the floor) and thread arm underneath, pushing your shoulder towards the floor and reaching out as far as you can.
•
Step 5:
Untwist and repeat.
Do this as many times as you need in order to improve your rotation!
•
Let me know how this feels for you and please feel free to email or message me with any questions! Enjoy!
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Breathing Tip!
Inhale as you rotate up to the ceiling, exhale nice and slow as you thread your arm through, reaching out as far as you can.
