Once the foundations are laid and the heart of the altar is in place, we begin inviting the elements into the space.
The elements help us connect with the natural world and bring balance to the altar. Each one carries a different quality, teaching, and way of relating.
For this altar, we begin with:
South — Earth: a crystal, representing grounding, stability, nourishment, and connection with the land
West — Water: a shell, representing flow, feeling, cleansing, and the emotional body
North — Air: feathers, representing breath, movement, prayer, clarity, and inspiration
East — Sun: a candle, representing light, warmth, clarity, vitality, and new beginnings
As you build your own altar, use what feels meaningful and appropriate for you. A stone from your garden, a bowl of water, a leaf, a flower, a found feather, or a simple candle can be enough.
A gentle reminder: before taking anything from nature—whether a crystal, stone, shell, feather, or plant; pause and ask permission before bringing it home. Where appropriate, offer something in return - a song, prayer, words of gratitude, water or to***co in accordance to your own teachings, connection and cultural protocols.
In Part 4, we’ll share how to activate, tend and keep the relationship with the altar alive.
Setting up an altar — Part 1 of 4: Laying Foundations
Before we place a single object on an altar, we begin with relationship.
We take a moment to connect with the spirit of the space, acknowledge the land beneath us, and ask permission to begin. This helps us approach altar-making not simply as arranging meaningful items, but as a practice of presence, reciprocity, and intention.
In this first step, we use Agua Florida to clear, anoint, and bless the space. We also make a small offering to anchor the altar, followed by another offering of Agua Florida to “quench the thirst” of Pachamama—our Earth Mother.
These simple acts help create a foundation of respect before we begin inviting the elements and medicines onto the altar.
In the next video, we’ll share about the heart of the altar: the central intention, prayer, or relationship that guides the space.

Why create an altar?
An altar is a small, intentional space that helps us pause and return to what is sacred.
It can become a place of stillness and silence, away from the external noise of everyday life—a space to breathe, reflect, pray, give thanks, remember, and listen within.
Your altar may hold objects that carry meaning: a candle, flowers, water, stones, sacred scent, photos, medicine, offerings, or something gathered from the land. These are not just decorations; they can become gentle reminders of the relationships, values, memories, and intentions that guide you.
It does not need to be elaborate, follow a particular tradition, or look like anyone else’s. It only needs to feel sincere and meaningful to you.
Over time, it can become a living space—changing with the seasons, your prayers, and the chapters of your life.
May your altar be a place that brings you home to yourself.
Later this week, we’ll be sharing a video on how we create and tend our altar space, with simple ways you can begin creating one of your own.
What would you place on your altar?

For us, every day is Earth Day. Every step outside is another chance to remember what a blessing it is to touch this soil, feel this wind on our skin, breathe this air and drink this precious water of life.
Making offerings is one way we honour that.
A flower laid at the roots of a tree.
A whispered song to the river.
A breath of gratitude into the wind.
When we make offerings, we remember the land is not an object under our feet, but a living mother who feeds and nurtures us. When we leave a flower, a song, a breath of gratitude, we are not “doing a ritual” — we are entering an ancient conversation.
The wind hears us.
The fire witnesses us.
The waters feel us.
The earth receives us.
Much like any relationship, this bond is a continuous, living co‑creation. Over time, a subtle, personal relationship begins to blossom, and we start to remember that we are not alone in this universe.
What is one small offering you feel called to make to the land today?

How are you directing this fire? How are you supporting your vision?

Ceremonial perfumes are not just fragrances.
They are ritual medicines — worked with around the body, the space, and the altar to cleanse, bless, protect, and mark a moment as sacred.
Worked with around the body and energy field — by the river, in the forest, or in the heart of the city, wherever you choose to make space sacred.
Some clear heaviness.
Some ground and re‑centre.
Some uplift the spirit, protect the field, or carry offerings and prayers to the unseen ones we walk with.
This is a small glimpse into these ways, and into how we work with our own ceremonial perfumes at Earth Heart Medicine.
If this resonates, save this reel to return to before your next ceremony, and share it with someone who walks with ritual and plant medicines.
